In 2009, Prof. Humberto Brandão created the Research & Development Lab (R&D Lab, or LP&D, in Portuguese) with a very specific aim: solving real life problems using cutting-edge research.

In his opinion, this process is important because, now, a big part of the Brazilian research does not have relationship with real life problems. In this context, the R&D Lab has tried to connect Brazilian academy with the real world.

Nowadays, this laboratory has some applicable projects that involve research related to Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics, Simulation and Optimization.

The lab has an area of 90 square meters. This space is divided in 3 rooms and it can support 20 people working simultaneously.

Hundreds of people have worked in the R&D Lab since 2009.
